Metformin weight loss claims are something that are often talked about by health professionals to be one of the benefits of commencing metformin therapy, but are they true? This is Similar to Phentermine.

Metformin is possibly one of the most important treatments in Type II Diabetes, so the question of metformin weight loss is of the utmost importance, as if true it could provide a means to lose weight as well as control high sugar levels found in diabetes.
What is Metformin?
Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic medication – meaning it reduces levels of sugar, or more specifically glucose in the blood. It is so effective that the American Diabetes Association says that unless there is a strong reason not to, metformin should be commenced at the onset of Type II Diabetes. Metformin comes in tablet form and the dose is gradually increased until the maximum dose required is achieved.
How Does Metformin Work & Why Would it Cause Weight Loss?
Metformin works by three major mechanisms – each of which could explain the “metformin weight loss” claims. These are:
- Decrease sugar production by the liver – the liver can actually make sugars from other substances, but metformin inhibits an enzyme in the pathway resulting in less sugar being released into the blood.
- Increase in the amount of sugar utilization in the muscles and the liver – Given that the muscles are a major “sink” for excess sugar, by driving sugar into them metformin is able to reduce the amount of sugar in the blood.
- Preventing the breakdown of fats (lipolysis) – this in turn reduces the amount of fatty acids available, so less of them can be used to produce sugar.
What are the Side Effects of Using Metformin for Weight Loss?
It would be great if the proposed metformin weight loss effects resulted in someone losing weight, but only if it is safe to use metformin and not too much of a displeasure to do so.
On the whole, metformin is a fairly safe drug to use unless you have kidney or liver impairment or unstable heart failure. It can also in some cases cause lactic acidosis and for this reason needs to be stopped before any operations or scans using certain contrasts.
The “metformin weight loss” benefits are also not detracted from by side effects, as the most common side effect is loose bowel motions which often settle after the medication has been taken for a period of time. For this reason, if the metformin weight loss claims are true, there is no major reason it could not be used for this purpose in most individuals.
How Well Does Metformin Work?
Although metformin weight loss is the main issue of this article, the real measure of how well metformin works is by how much it improves diabetes control. The way of measuring this is through HbA1C, which amazingly shows an average of the bloods sugar levels over a 3 month period. Metformin incredibly reduces the HbA1C by an average of 1.5%, which in the world of diabetes is a huge improvement. For this reason, if metformin weight loss claims are true, then this truly is a wonder drug for more reasons than one as it can help improve diabetes control thus reducing incidence of complications e.g. heart attacks such as the infamous ‘Widowmaker’.
Can Metformin Actually Help You Lose Weight?
Sadly for those wanting an answer to the Metformin weight loss question, the answer is not that simple. On a positive note, it does seem that in general, metformin does not lead to weight gain. But it is metformin weight loss that we are discussing, right? Well yes, but this point is important because the use of several diabetic treatments such as insulin or sulphonylureas often results in weight gain. So by not causing weight gain, when used to treat diabetes, metformin treatment results in a lower resultant body weight compared to other options.
Some studies however have reported metformin weight loss – in some cases up to 2.9kg. These studies hold hope for the metformin weight loss claim, but the weight loss achieved is by no means substantial, meaning that metformin treatment for weight loss alone is not advised.
Conclusion
The fact is that metformin is an amazing drug for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. It is relatively safe to use and provides substantial results in terms of controlling blood sugars. When it comes to metformin and weight loss however, the results are simply not supportive of its use solely for this reason.
I weigh 50 kilos only & my height is 5 feet 3 inches. I look frail & when I told the doctor that I am taking metformin for type 2 diabetes said that is the cause of my weight loss & my endocrinologist prescribed a small dose of kombiglyze 5mg over 5oo. I am still losing weight inspite of good apetite. Could it be the netformin causing it. Milagros Manalo
I was taken off metformin after sometime since I was also taking insulin. I do not believe metformin makes u lose wt
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 weeks ago. When I first started taking it the nausea was bothersome but a couple days in, it was gone. I have been taking this for 10 days now and have lost 7 lbs! I am now taking Metformin and have no negative side effects.
My ins. doesn not cover Metformin. I just search in Google for this keyword “MET247GET” to find the reliable sources and save $. Hope this helps.
Amanda is the metformin still working for you? Any more weight loss?
It’s hard to say. I have lost 15 pounds, due not just to the metformin, but also healthier eating and increased exercise, because I feel better.
How many mg of Metformin are you taking? And how many times a day? I have PCOS and was prescribed 500mg of Metformin/once a day.
I was put on 500mg of metformin 3 times per day after being told I had Type II. After struggling to lose weight for many years, I lost 6 lb in the first week. By the end of year one I have lost 2 stone. I noticed that the fat started to melted off my legs and arms within weeks. I look great and feel amazing. I did start eating healthier, but I then found that my appetite disappeared, I drank excessively, had more hot flushes than usual. Never felt sick or had upset tummy. I would recommend Metformin to help lose weight but you must put a bit of effort in too. You find that your appetite disappears anyway so you may aswell eat healthier. It turns out that Type II was the best thing to happen to me because I have now lost all of my excess weight and am now Type II free !!
Thank you for your testimony. Gives me hope
Hi. I’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 and started this drug. It’s been 3 days and the nausea is horrible and definitely loss of appetite. Has anyone experienced this?
I have lost 40 pounds on metformin
Are you taking extended or immediate release?
..and you cant spell. you sound like an idiot.
You can’t punctuate or use capitol letters when appropriate. Pot/Kettle
Haha pot/kettle 😀🙂🌺
I am taking metformin 500 mg twice Day and it’s been 1 month now but didn’t loose anything and my belly fat gain too.Any one have issue like me?
Please any suggestions
I’ve been on Metformin for 6 years. It’s never given me diarrhea. It’s never helped me lose weight. I’ve actually gained from it. So all this hype about it not causing weight gain is bull. My doctor took me off it and I actually feel better and have lost 4 pounds in one week.
I was taking metformin 500 mgs in a split dose, daily, for its claimed anti aging benefits for four years.
I also gained 20 pounds with most of it in my abdominal area.
I always ate well and exercised. Still, I could not lose the fat even with stepped up diet and lifestyle improvements.
I finally noticed that the start of my weight gain was shortly after initiating the use of Metformin.
I stopped taking it three weeks ago, and already lost 4 pounds.
Not everyone loses weight on Metformin. So, if you take it an notice weight gain, it may be the Metformin.
What do u take instead
Give it time I had same problem as you now I am 6 months down the road 40 pounds like 190-150 with the belly issue and I have lost most of my belly with no changes to life style
Yes it is.
Regards dr. Sharpe
I gained about 100 pounds and couldn’t lose it no matter how much I exercised or dieted. I was then diagnosed with pre type 2 diabetes and prescribed metformin. Without even trying, I’ve lost 17 pounds in about 2 months! I had some stomach issues at first but I also had a sudden drop in my appetite while taking it. I often forget about eating now. It’s great! It’s a lot like phentermine without the jitters. So I say YES, for me, it helps you to lose weight.
What dosages where you taking?
How many milligrams a day did you take?
I find that my appetite and cravings are reduced while on metformin. Less food, less calories equals weight loss.
i have lost 40 pounds since starting metformin 7 months ago. I’m never hungry
Did you make any lifestyle changes?
Hi Jessica, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes i December. Was put on metformin straight away but made life style changes immediately. Was terrified of complications , am a staff jure and seen too much over the years not to. So it’s not a miracle cure but definately helps. Have lost two and a half stone and have started walking a lot with my dog. What they don’t tell you is the pain you feel in leg mussels is the build up of sugar. Now that’s gone am much more active. All this takes time and is a personal journey but so worth it . Look up prebiotics. These are worth checking out.
I am ttc my Dr prescribed metformin.but I don’t have type 2 diabetes.only unexplained infertility for seven years and alot of weight.
My X husband took it in 4 months he lost 40 pounds and still losing but he weigh 265 to start. I wish my Drs would give me a prescription of it but I have a liver Dr so I doubt. I run border line fiabete and I do not over eat. Oh my X did nothing and lost weigh.
I’ve been on this for 3 weeks now I have noticed a diffence in my appetite I do have to make myself eat… I started out taking 1 a day 2rd week 2 a day.. Still at 2 a day..I don’t weigh myself when do you think I should see weight drop… I’m trying to eat healthy also stopped drinking sodas … Just curious
It really works, I have lost 25 pounds and 6 inches in 7 weeks
I lost near a 100 lbs. at 240 over the corse of metformin 14 years.

What is the dose that he used to take?
I have been taking Metformin for 6 months and have lost 36 lbs. Another half a year and I should be able to put on my old Army uniform.
I’m on week 3 of metformin, and haven’t lost any weight yet, I’m hoping it shifts soon. I do a lot of walking and eat sensible fruit veg etc. How soon after going on the meds did your weight start to reduce?
Have to eat a lot of protein (my doctor has me on 60 grams/day), and 2 cups of leafy veggies on top of 2 cups of cruciferous veggies (broccoli is good). Cut out all artificial sweeteners, sugar, and any bread, pasta, or potatoes.and feel great– although metformin can make me spacey and nauseous for an hour after taking it. I usually drink some broth (my body needs salt) and feel great after 20 minutes. I’ve lost 8 lbs. in 3 weeks; slow and steady!
Aapko diabetes bhi tha kya ya aise weight loss hua
I was put on Metformin and lost weight immediately. My dose was increased to twice per day and my weight remained steady. Due to my A1C going to 5.4-5.6 my Dr. lowered the dose to once per day and I very soon after the change noticed a craving for sweets again and weight gain of 8 pounds over 6 months. I do believe that Metformin decreases appetite and cravings thus the weight loss. I also make an assumption that increased utilization of the sugar and interference with storage of sugar also interferes with weight gain.
I lost 150lbs on Metformin and I kept 90% of that off 5 years later. It is not a magic pill. I count fats, carbs and proteins. If you can get close on your own the extra little push can make big difference. Also, I find that it reduces my food cravings. I am not sure why. I am type 2 and my A1C numbers are clearly better with metformin.
I agree
Hi I was put on Metformin 500mg twice a day due to being put on a medication that I put 14kgs on, so I weighed 84kg 5.4 in height clinically obese, Nov 2018. I noticed a appetite change and eating smaller portions and fresh fruit and loads of green lemon tea without caffeine and sweetener. Its now March and I now weigh 76 kilos, Im thrilled. Without exercise apart from the stairs in my house I go up and down all the time. Before taking Metformin I tried exercise and diet but couldnt move a kilo so Im thrilled I feel so good and I have more energy loosing that weight. So I am a strong believer that Metformin is suitable for weightloss. Also I dont have diabetes never have. WINNING!
Are you still taking 500mg twice a day? Are you still losing weight?
I’ve just been given this drug for type 11 diabetes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Especially on the subject of weight loss, as it’s a priority because of other help problems too.
Hi take your tablet with breakfast that normally stops hunger for about 6 hrs with me everyone is different drink lots of water. It may work but you have to want it to work
Don’t think this is a midscale pill its not, lactic acid build up ans endurance is reduced with exersise, but to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume, so get your ass to the gym, Im hypothyroid and bad type 2 diabetes, i was obese and could not run for longer than 30 seconds now after 3 months training i am doing 30 – 45 mins HIT on treadmill, EXERCISE. i burn 500 – 600 cals a day at the gym.
Have you lost any weight? I have hypothyroid also and pre diabetes. my doctor just gave me this pills 500ml per day. and I exercise about 4x a week.
Of course exercise works but this medication does help with weight loss. Medical conditions do make it worse for some to lose weight.
hi, I take metformin for diabetes 2…I have lost 30 pounds and a lot of my muscle mass…I can’t afford to loose any weight..I had to beg my doctor to take me off of it . I went from 160 to 129 in less than 3 months.
Hi Linda, I’m guessing you follow a healthy diet due to your diabetes. My question is do you exercise often? 30 pounds in 3 months may be a lot depending your hight and muscular composition.
I just got a prescription I weight 205, I’m 5’5 and kind of muscular so I actually need to loose about 30 lb of fat..
Did you have any other major side effects?
Thanks for taking the time.
Anelis
I have not tried it. I just picked my script up. Is there horrible side effects. I am loving the part of loosing weight. Maybe I can exercise easier with a few less pounds
Linda Hagquist hello. I am in the same place as you are. I was 187 now I’m 162. I’m starting to look awful plus stomach
ssues. Started taking 500mg daily in April. Did your Dr.change your meds? If so, to what? Has it helped?.
How much is your dosage?
Did you start working out, change diet or have lots of runs to the bathroom? I’m at 160 and would love to lose 30 pounds. I start taking it tomorrow. I’m diabetic with A1C at 6.8.
Hi I am new to this site . And also new in taking metformin 1000mg. I am scare to take it . My AC1 was 6.4 my doctor said I am type 2. scare of side effects dont like taking meds.
Hi I’m Jackie, I just start taking metformin 4 days ago. My A1C was 9.2. Take 1 in am and 1in pm. Major diarrhea, will this get better?
Hi Mary. Just curious, did you lose your desired weight loss? I just started taking 500mg twice per day. I lost 3 pounds in the first week alone!
I lost 94 lbs. since my Dr put me on Metformin 500 mg twice a day! My sugar A1C has been in the normal range for a year! Dr said I had borderline Diabetes; thus the Metformin. Gained 19 lbs. back over about a year, but I needed to gain at least ten, so other than the other 9 lbs. I’ve been working on, I am deleriuosly happy!!!
What happens if your not DiabeticTaking the pills
I was wondering the same thing. Did anyone answer you?
I havnt lost weight taking it for 3 years but I do have a lot of sweet things I’m type 2
Very nice post Dr. Murtaza Ahmed!
When it comes to losing weight or maintaining your current weight, there are no forbidden foods. Anything can be consumed in moderation. You simply need to make sure that you don’t over consume calories. There are a few programs out there that can show you exactly how to do that.
Stop, you are actually clueless. There are so many issues that can effect people’s ability to gain/lose weight. Particularly women. Insulin resistance, pcos, prolactinoma, Cushing syndrome, lipoedema, lymphadema, steroid medication, adrenal fatigue – all of these effect the weight outside of the calorie deficit dogma. In fact in some cases the cortisol feedback from calorie deficit can lead to MORE abdominal fat retention. This is a solid 15% or more, of women affected by these conditions and we’re absolutely sick of basic nobodies with no studies large scale studies on women under their belt spouting crap to sell their next “diet” program. Macros matter, medical conditions matter. Get a clue
After I started taking Metformin, I lost about 20 lbs in 3 months.
were you overweight? i’ve gained about 25-30 pounds in three years. despite working out and eating healthy, i cannot drop a single pound. my doc just prescribed this and hopefully i’ll see some results.
Do you have to be a diabetic to be on Metformin?
Hi Joyce, No you don’t . 4 years ago i had very high insulin resistance but now everything its good, found out before It turned into type II diabetes, but now I’ve been eating only fruits and vegtables and exercising and for three weeks I gained 1kg, so I visited my doctor today and he said that Metformin will help me lose weight so I hope it will.
You will see results but you have to watch your calories. I have lost 21 lbs in two and a half months …… I have a horrible thyroid and was desperate. I only had diarrhea with this med for one day. Now, if I eat something I shouldn’t it can get bad but it goes away quickly.
I do have diarrhea from taking metformin 500mg what can I do to control this just started taking it about a month. When I get diarrhea l can’t control it
Have you tried essential oils? DoTERR’s DigestZen helps any stomach issues I’ve had.
I am taking:
Metformin 850mg TID
Glipizide 10mg BID
Januvia 100mg QD
Precose 50mg TID
I am loosing my weight too much. I used to be 120lbs+, now I am 107lbs. could it be because of highest dose of Metformin? Should I lower down my Metformin dose from TID to BID? Please respond me.
Thanks,
Dinesh Gandhi
Metformin comes in 500mg tablets. How are you getting 850mg? That makes no sense, check your pill bottle for the right dose. The maximum dose of metformin is 2500mg, which is 5 tablets daily. You are on 4 different pills for diabetes. I would seek a new doctor or at the very least an endocrinologist. No one here is going to tell you what to do with your medication, and if they do, they are idiots. Go see your doctor. You don’t just randomly change your dosage with medication by yourself, that is a very dangerous habit to get into.
Metformin does come in 850mg and yes I’m a physician
And not terribly abnormal to be on 3-4 meds prior to resorting to insulin
I started Metformin 2 months ago along with phentermine and a daily vitamin.
I changed my diet to reduced sugar, rice, pasta or bread. Tea, Coffee, water and sugar free cool aid. It is not a total NO carb diet. When I do consume carbs, I only eat one portion. For instance, I only eat 1/2 of my biscuit with my bacon in the morning. I have lost 17 pounds 45 1/2 inches. I have lost 3 pant sizes. My doctor does blood work and monthly follow ups. Do not weigh every day. The weight goes up and down. Do measure your inches. You will not be disappointed.
I was put on a very strict diet a few years ago. She put me on the max dose of Victoza, Januvia and I was still taking 25 units of insulin at each meal. At that time my A1C was I think a 10. And all my lab work was out of whack. Also a 36g of carbs a day and NO MORE. I was scared but took on the challenge and was very strict, except I gave myself ONE cheat day a week because I knew if I didn’t I would fail the diet, so I had something each week to keep pushing me. The weight just started dropping off. In 3 months time I was down 40lbs and feeling wonderful. I decided to continue on this journey until one day a tragedy in my family so I went off the diet. At that time I was down around 60lbs. BYW, I weighed about 287lbs. when I started. After all the grieving ( which took a toll on me an a while to get through it). I tackled the diet again. Didn’t stay as strict and seen little weight loss. Through the years I have gone off and on the diet. I never once exercised and my skin showed it lol. Let’s see that was around 2013. My marriage was having problems in 2015 and again off the diet I started noticing more weight loss (stress). Marriage Problems fixed. (so I thought) the weight started coming back on. Once again in 2015 more marriage issues. Started losing weight AGAIN LOL. At this time I was around 215lbs. We separated again August of 2016 with my weight dropping at what seemed like a fast pace. This year around April I was weighing in at 175 which was my goal weight from the beginning. I had finally made it and decided it was time to just maintain. Unfortunately it has been increasing at a fast pace. I had my 3rd surgery a month ago and still on limitations ( yes I had started working out to maintain) now I can barely walk down the driveway without feeling like I’m dying. Oh, I have multiple serious medical problems as well, that doesn’t help me and being on disability now. So I went to the dr. Today and weighed in at 196′?I told my new doctor I’ve had it. So I was put on metformin a while back but wouldn’t take it because I bough it caused weight gain. The dr. Also put me on phentermine. I’m ready to kick this fat back off again and I have a new goal of 150. I’m 5’7 and wear a size 10 when at 170. I have a very large body frame so I don’t have much BMInbut wanna try to get into an eight. I will be extatic. I’m so happy I found this blog. If anyone wants to diet together and keep each other on track, you can add me on Facebook. Missy Cauley is my name and I’m in Illinois. Thanks again everyone.
Sorry it’s SO long. When I talk to text I don’t know when to shut up haha. If anyone adds me to Facebook please send me a message through messenger and let me know so I can respond and add you. Have a blessed day everyone.
This blabbering story highlights that you have multiple issues that have nothing to do with Metformin use. How dare you come here and try and solicit “diet partners” for yourself! Go see a therapist and work out your issues. Diets are dangerous and not sustainable long term. With your yo-yo weight history, you are the last person I would want to team up with for any health endeavour. You need to deal with your emotional issues and stop focusing on weight loss.
Ironic that your handle is “sunny sally” when you’re such an awful witch.
What a negative Nelly right? Everyone has the right to scroll on if they are disagree with a comment. Not cool!
Don’t let negative people bring you down. That mean response was out of line and uncalled for. Maybe they should go back to therapy. I’m thinking not their first session based on that outburst (which is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of) to discuss why your comment triggered them so much to the point that they felt it to be an acceptable action to lash out at you. Good luck in your health and weight loss journey. I know this is an old post and I hope that you have had significant progress. If not, tomorrow is a new day.
To sunnysally911:
How dare YOU! That is absolutely RUDE! If someone here wishes to help someone else (and themselves to better health in the process) by having them join together to keep on track, that’s a great thing! I applaud them.
If YOU do not wish to team um with Missy, leave her alone then!
(to the others here,I apologize for my angry response, but there arent enough people in this world who want to help others, and I tend to get bothered when someone bashes one of tyhose who ARE trying to help. Not so sunny sally took a real negative view of kindness and it got to me.)
That was mean.
She could have ADHD like I do. I tend to go on and on. ADHD is a disease with certain symptoms. You shouldn’t judge a person. You have no idea what she has and is going through. I think you need a therapist. This is not the place to attack someone. We are all just trying to get well
Should be Cloudy Day Sally, Grow up, he can say wht he wants. You need to go away.
wow how dare you be so inconsiderate to someone wanting to be positive and helpful to others just because she has other issues and takes more meds than metformin. You are an idiot that don’t even need to be on the internet period acting like this to anyone. I am guessing you are a very un happy person that takes their frustration out on people via internet bec I highly doubt you do that to peoples face you would probably get your ass kicked which it sounds like you need so keep your rotten attitude to yourself no one wants to hear it.
You’re so fresh Sunny ! That girl said nothing wrong. She’s not blathering just telling her feelings.
Unnecessary Attack!!! Sunny Cloudy Sally
You need god!

Hi my name its susej I’m diagnostic with PCOS and DR send to me Metformin 500 mg twice a day , I thing its to much also I have a high testosterone , I have a litter scare to take this medication what did you recommend ?
I have PCOS and because I can not take hormone pills because it gave me blood clots in my lungs the next best thing is Metformin. I have been on it for years.
Did you need to lose weight? If so has metformin caused you to lose any pounds?
I have PCOS and need to lose serious amount of weight but it’s so hard. My Dr just have me on birth control pills but I want to mention metformin to hear to help me lose the weight. Some years ago I had gained 65 pounds in 3 months and my Dr at the time put me on metformin. I don’t know if it helped but my weight was more under control but went off metformin after my insurance and Dr. changed.
metformin is classically prescribed for PCOS by endocrinologists.
Do you have to be a diabetic to use metformin?
No. I am pre-diabetic/Insulin Resistance. Took Glucose Tolerance test and nearly passed out. Basically, you drink a beverage slightly sweeter than Pepsi on an empty stomach and they take a blood sample every 30 minutes. My sugar and insulin shot up during first 30 minutes. Then the insulin shot up some more, some more, some more, then it starting working and my sugar went down to 53 and I nearly passed out. So I asked the doctor if I am in jeaopardy if I consume a Pepsi on an empty stomach, maybe I should be on diabetes medicine even if I’m not fully diabetic yet. She put me on metformin. I have not noticed any reduction in appetite, but my percent body fat has been declining at a steady pace since I started taking it. I have been on a very low carb diet and have been exercising over 1 1/2 hours a day and my weight was steadily creeping up. The metformin reversed that. I have heard that you cannot burn fat when insulin is in your blood. I think metformin gets the sugar taken care of and then the insulin leaves your blood, allowing fat to be burned.
When will i get a response
In general one would have to be a diabetic to be treated with metformin.
I am not a diabetic and have been prescribed metformin by my endocrinologist as well as my gynecologist. I’m on a full dose of 2000 mg and it has done wonders for my in conceiving my child.
Wonderful, congratulations ?
hi my dr prescribed me metformin twice a day bcoz i want to concieve and she gave me clomid for getting pragnent is metformin works together plz suggest me
Hi Doctor,
I am taking one Glucovance pill per day since 2 wks for type two diabetics. I have hypothyroidism. I eat low carb. food too! I haven’t lost a pound yet. May I know why?
Thanks
I don’t know why but I have hypothyroidism as well. Metformin is certainly working for me but I am not even close to having diabetes. I don’t deprive myself but I try to stay under my caloric count for the day. I JOURNAL everything I eat and keep track of my calories. It HAS worked for me but I exercise a tiny bit as well – meaning I walk. I eat meat but only the correct portion. I have lost 21 lbs in 2.5 months.
But do doctors prescribe metiformin to help individuals lose weight?? I need to lose 45-50 pounds!
I have pcos. My acne and hair loss was bad and so were my pms symptoms…. I have always ate sort of healthy, meaning 5 times a week meats a veggies, and 2 times a week pizza and fries. Water only. I’m not diabetic although I share most symptoms (constantly tested) I have been on metforming 500 two times a day, and have lost zero pounds. I will say I’m not active. Like at all. I work in front of four computer screens 60 hours a week. I’m going to try walking more at night but I don’t see myself dramatically losing weight like the rest of you ?
I have metabolic syndrome and have been put on metformin.
You got a response above. You don’t have to be a diabetic to take metformin. Cheers
+Metformin —> Less sugar –> less insulin –> +increased leptin sensitivity in brain –> more SNS activity –> +NEAT/fidgeting and lower appetite –> weight loss.
I have PCOS and trying to get pregnant. I read that metformin could help with my ovulation problems. I’m not a diabetic but wouldnt mind to loose a few pounds, since my weight its slighly above ideal. I’m really tempted to try this treatment so it could really help me with 2 big issues i have right now. What would you recomend? And how much mg a day?
Ask your doctor they will tell you how much MG to start with
I have hypothyroidism and pcos I was on metformin 500mg twice a day for 3 months and got pregnant wasn’t trying I was always told it would be hard for me to conceive but my gyno said that’s more than likely what caused it I also lost 20lbs on it before I got pregnant without any extra exercise or diet had to stop taking it while pregnant and breast feeding I just started back this week I’m hoping it will help me get rid of this baby weight…. hope that helps you.
Since I’ve been taking metformin I’ve been loosing weight and some inches everyone that I’ve talked to said that it makes them lose weight a lady said her family member went from a size 18 pants to a size 8 or 10 if I’m not mistaken all of us are type 2 diabetics
I’m not diabetic but I do have pcos and hypothyroidism and was prescribed metformin to treat the pcos and i did also lose weight like 20 lbs in 3 months with no exercise or particular diet along with taking my synthroid
How long did it take for you to start losing weight? I’ve been on it (and Nature Thyroid) for two weeks and haven’t lost anything yet.
I am a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic and was taking just glipizide 5mg BID. My doc just added 500 mg metformin 1x daily and it has completely deadened my appetite to where I have to make myself eat. If this continues I can certainly see losing weight from the metformin.
May I ask did you suffer from any side effects? I was jut prescribed and am taking my first dose today. thank you!
I was just prescribed this today too! I am starting at 500mg. Tomorrow will be my first dose. I am so nervous to be on this medication, but I am really hoping for some weight loss!
Karen did you have any success with weightless ?
I’ve just been prescribed metformin for diabetic control. I was told to take one pill twice a day, however, no other directions were given. I’ve read here that I should take with a full glass of water with breakfast but what about my evening pill? I also take cymbalta for fibromyalgia. And januvia with my am dose of metformin. Finally, I take zolpidem for sleep but have lain awake the past two nights and the only difference is I take the night time dose of metformin with the zolpidem. I need to lose weight and I also need to sleep. When and how should I take the metformin to accomplish both goals?
Hi, I am a pharmacist. It is recommended to take metformin with your morning and night meals to eliminate possible side effects such as gas and upset stomach. For zolpidem, it is recommended for you to take it right before bedtime with empty stomach for the best result.
So here is a recommended schedule for you:
Take with morning meal: Cymbalta, metformin
Take with evening meal: Metformin
Take right before bedtime: Zolpidem
Also it is recommended not to use any electronic device that emits bright light such as tablet, cellphone, Television…etc. These devices may make you harder to fall asleep if you use them before bedtime. Try to find a way to put yourself to sleep instead of taking pills for long term because from my experience many people develop either tolerance or dependence on sleeping pills.
Here are some recommendations copied directly from medical guidelines for improving sleep hygiene:
* Keep the bedroom dark, comfortable, and quiet
* Keep a regular sleep schedule
* Avoid daytime naps even after a poor night of sleep – or limit to 30 minutes
*Reserve bedroom for only sleep and sex
*Turn the face of dock aside to minimize anxiety about falling asleep
* If unable to sleep, get up and do something to take your mind off sleeping
*Establish a pre-bedtime ritual to condition your body for sleep
*Relax before bedtime with soft music, mild stretching, yoga, or pleasurable reading
*Avoid exercising right before bedtime
*Do not eat heavy meals before bedtime
*Do not take any caffeine in the afternoon
Metformin helps you lose weight as long as you meet a certain set of conditions. For example, if you’re type 1 and have good blood sugar control, Metformin can help you lose weight. If you’re type 2 and you don’t have good blood sugar control, Metformin will not help you lose weight (though it will help lower your blood sugar).
Starting Metformin today, 500mg 2X. 5’8, 180 pounds. A1c was 15.6! Doctor order extended release, wanted me on 2000mg, but I’m starting with half the dose. 50 year old female with hair loss issues to boot. Will let you know if Metformin helps with any of these problems.
Hello
I’m also 50 years old with hair loss issues, overweight and have pcos. I just started taking Metformin yesterday 500mg 2x a day. Wondering, how it is working for you? Do you see any positive changes?
Since February of this year, 11 months ago I have went from 270 lbs to 219 lbs and counting. My eating habits have changed a bit and I’m not as hungry now. I take a 500mg of metformin in the morning and the same after dinner. The occasional bouts with the bathroom is my only drawback. Now I want to stop at 205 ?
Do you have to be border line diabetic to take Metformin can someone who just want to lose weight try thhis
I have lost almost 25lbs in about 8 weeks however, the biggest problem I have had is consistent diarrhea. I have researched this and it seems to be a common result from taking medformin. Anyone else have a solution to this problem? I read the slower dosage may relieve this.
How did you lose that much weight?
Mine to..its been 8 weeks and I’ve lost 21 lbs being on Metformin 1 pill a day and a low carb diet…I eat no bread, sugar, rice none of that …
I was prescribed it because I could never loose weight anything I did and I found out I have Insulin intolerance were everything turns to sugar …
I must have been one of the lucky ones. I was prescribed a scaling dose of Metformin. Meaning you start with two at night and progress to 2 in the morning. I couldn’t take the two in the morning so my doctor recommended I just take the two at night. I only had diarrhea for 2 days unless I eat something that I shouldn’t. That has happened once. I also have hypothyroidism. I have lost 21 lbs in 2.5 months. But I also journal all my food on LOSEIT! and keep track of my weight daily on The Hacker’s Diet. It is helping me. Good luck!
I take metformin for PCOS. It took me awhile to be able to start taking the medication because of nausea. I fixed that problem by taking it at night before I go to bed so that way I can sleep through the upset stomach. I have only had one bad case of diarrhea. I have only been steadily taking it for maybe 2-3 weeks now & have noticed a huge change in my appetite. I have been losing weight in my stomach & the facial hair that I had a problem with has been growing in thinner & lighter which is amazing. I was wondering if there was anyone else on here taking metformin for PCOS & what changes they have noticed after a steady period of time. I am hoping that the side effects related to my disease will decrease in terms of facial hair & unproportionate weight gain.
How long after starting Metformin did you have weight loss?
Thanks,
Brandy
I hope i have results also starting. Metformon tomorrow for pcos hair growth and weight gaim..
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 4 years ago 2014 and was given 1000mg of Metformin a day and lost 30 lbs. right away but had diarrhea every night. It subsided after 2 months. I’ve kept the weight off for the 4 years. I’ve went through several Doctors since. I’m a 53 year old female with PCOS diagnosed when I was in my early 20’s. I was 290 lbs. before the weight loss. Went down to 260 and stayed that way now for years. I just got a new Doctor and she had to up my Metformin to 2000 mg a day and now here comes the diarrhea again and weight loss. She had to do something because my A1C is to high at 8.1 and the not lossing weight for 3 years concerned her. It concerned me as well. My PCOS is doing this to me. I hate the stuff! I hope and pray she can help me get out of this funk!! I’m tired of the hurting feet due to neuropathy and the tingling hands. I try to exercise when I’m able but due to bad sciatica and falling due to the bad sciatica on my right side I’m afraid to do to much because I can sure break a hip next time if I fall again. Just doing my best in living day to day with the Diabetes. Being 5’11.5″ tall doesn’t help with weight loss either. That’s a myth people saying if your taller it’s easier to loose weight…I have to say NO IT’S NOT!!! I’m going to be 54 in Jan. 2019 and still not at my Goal 200 lbs. but maybe one day I will be!!!
I agree with the height comment. I am 6 feet Tall and their are pros and cons with that. One, as you know you can weigh a lot and not look as heavy as you really are. Two (Con) you lose 20 lbs, and no one notices… Good with the bad.. All good, tall is nice.
So the big question is, if one is not diabetic and is without health problems other than being some 50lbs overweight, where can one obtain brand Metformin from ?
Speak to your doctor, I am only 30 lbs over weight and just got my prescription. I am kinda of nervous to take it because of the possible bathroom trips.
Hello, I would like to know if yall are taking the Metformin while your actually eating your meal or 30-45 minutes before??? I’ve seen both recommended. I’m on 500mg twice a day. Not the extended release. Thank you!
Brandy
Brandy did you ever find the answer. What is the best time to take metformin?
do you take it at the same moment you begin your meal? or do you take it 15 minutes before or after your meal? also how is the metformin still working for you? Any weight loss?
I started taking metformin two days ago. 500 twice a day! It has torn my stomach up. Bathroom issues about 4 times a day. Please tell me this will get better. Blood sugar was 323 fasting and 2 days on metformin and down to 201. Not perfect yet but heading in a positive direction. I will say it sure curbs my appetite but the bathroom issues are crazy. Help with suggestions please. I hear it’s truly a great drug for type 2 diabetes. Will look forward to hearing some responses. Thank you!
Hi Lisa, My pharmacist said to start out only taking one dose a day. Then, after a few days add the second dose to minimize the side effects. I haven’t actually started taking the medication yet so I don’t know if that will help you or not but it might be worth a shot. I would call the pharmacist and/or your doctor and talk to them about it first to see if that is something you can try.
I just started today and already have a huge amount of gas and running to the bathroom. But after reading to perhaps start out on 500 once a day then work my way up, this sounds more like a plan.
I would try taking only one pill a day in the morning i take only one a day 500mg and have no side effects i hope this helps you.
I have used actoplusmet for years and I actually gained weight. My doctor sent me to an endocrinologist who changed it to only metphormin because I have congenital heart disease and actos can cause heart failure. He added Trulicity and Invokana. In 3 months I have lost 35lbs and I feel fantastic. Other than frequent upset stomach, especially if I eat ANY sugar. My blood sugars are phenomenal now. My weight has gone from 204 to 169. I am limited to no exercise above a walk because of my current heart issues until they are repaired, imagine if I could do more!!
this is great. Is the metformin still working? are you still losing weight?
Hi , My name is Gurleen. I have always had weight problem meaning I have always been a big girl. I currently weight 116 kilos. I have put on 17 kilos in last 6 months due to a injury in july last yr which is why I take lots of nerve meds and pain meds. Due to this gain in my weight, doctor got me to do my blood test to rule out type 2 diabetic. I am going today to see her and to know the bitter truth. She would be putting me on metformin I imagine. I wonder if I would loose weight on it. All this weight that I have gained has made my life harder. Very insecure about my self that I can’t even be open to my own hubby. He is amazing yet I feel scared and depressed. Do you guys think metformin would be helpfull at all? I am losing hope as well as losing myself.. !
I can relate to you. I went from weighing 400 lbs to 198 ( I am 6 ft 2 inched). I did this by watching my diet and exercising like crazy. I moved to the UAE 13 months ago, got married and have gained weight. My doctor has put me on metformin to lose weight. I have been taking it for two weeks now and have lost about 4 kilos. Like you, I feel insecure and it sucks. Plain and simple. I eat healthy and exercise but no matter how healthy I am, I was gaining weight.
Best wishes to you
Yess iam on .metformin for about 4 months now I woz 16 stone now 15 and a bit it does work I have type 2
Hey any updates on if it worked for weight loss? I might be put on it for PCOS and I currently weigh 61kgs from being 47kgs in October, 2018. I’m 5ft3. It’s attacking my self esteem so bad so I’m hoping Metformin will at least get me 12 kgs down.
How good is metformin can it help I need to loose some weight am tired now all my life
I have been on metformin for over a year. 500mg twice daily. At the same time, I have used a personal trainer who has pushed me very hard 3x per week for more than a year now. I was a college basketball player so I understand what workouts are about. I have cut my sugar intake way down and eat right about 90% of the time. I don’t drink a lot of alcohol.
In spite of all this, I haven’t lost a pound. I have lost inches, I look a lot better, but could still stand to lose about 40 pounds. On a positive note, I’m in 100x better shape now. I can blow through workouts that 6 months ago would have killed me. But it is very frustrating to work this hard and still wear the same clothes. It is also frustrating to read all the posts where people started taking metformin and the pounds just fell off.
I’m writing this for the people who are working hard but not seeing the success. Yet. You are not alone. Metformin is great for my glucose control, but it hasn’t done anything for my weight loss. It is not a miracle drug. It doesn’t just melt the weight off everyone.
Hi..I am having pcod 2 years…I am 22 years and having baby 5 years…I don’t know when they came…I had taken lots of tablets but no use ..I gain my weight 53 kg to 79 kg …my doctor prescribed metformin hcl tablets mettie 500 mg it can lose weight ..
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes just over a year ago. I was at 180 lbs at 4ft 9. Lets just say I was an unhealthy body weight. Since I have been taking Metformin, I am down to 140lbs. I have not changed my eating habits other then cutting out a majority of sugar. I still eat carbs ( I live with an italian). I don’t really exercise as I have a disability. It’s amazing the amount of weight I lost.
Kerry is the metformin still working for you? Any more weight loss? also do you take it at the same moment you begin your meal? or do you take it 15 minutes before or after your meal?
I take a combination of metphormin, invokana and trulicity and have lost 57lbs in 7 months. I have gone from a size 20 to a size 8. I am now experiencing frequent low blood sugars and not even using my full dose of metphormin. I fear some of these medications may be discontinued at my next visit. My healthy eating habits will stay with me though. Hopefully I continue on this weight loss journey. For my height I should be a size 2. Never thought it would be in sight for me.
I ma taking metformim 800 for wieght loss, i am have +1 sugar in my urine, what does it mean… 5 in height 65-70 kls after giving birthd to mu eldest who is 10years old. im 47kls before.
I’m taking 1000 two times a day for weigt loss. It’s been slow loosing weight and I get bloated a lot but no other problems. Is this too Much?
I take the same amount for my Type 2 diabetes. When I first started it I would need to run to the bathroom an hour after taking it, but your body will get used to it and your bloating should subside. I will now sometimes take my 2000MG all at once after a large meal and I handle it pretty well.
Can’t comment on the weight loss as I have stood at 220 LBS and rarely fluctuate.
I’m starting today 500mg once day with zero carbs diet.
I’m 120kg and 5’5! I have PCOS with nasty hair on chin+ irregular periods.
Hoping to shed some weight cos my boyfriend seems irritated by my weight gain?
I’mm gonna dump his a** when I do get back in shape.
Lol! This made me truly laugh out loud.. you go girl!
I’m 23 and 5’2 / 65kg. I’d like to lose 12kg or so and started on met 3 weeks ago (first two weeks a dosage of 500*2). This week I increased it up to 1500mg and I’m having horrible side effects. Not diarrhea but I feel very weak, slight fever, bit of nausea, just a sick/weak feeling in general.
My question is did any one else have these side effects and if so for how long? I’m really considering lowering the dosage as I can’t function like this!
I’m also a non diabetic.
Metformin drains your body of b vitamins, specifically b-12. Make sure you are taking plenty of that, electrolytes and water. Best of luck
I’ve been taking Metformin for several years due to Type II. I went from 230 to 164 presently. I eat way less now… just a loss of appetite. Nothing is really appealing any more… kinda a drag!
I’ve been taking metformin for 6 weeks now. 1 day after I started taking it my cycle started which was great because I did not have on for months before then, and it came on the following month right on time. I went back to the doctor for my 6 week check up from taking the medication and when I started I was 198, today I was 189 and I still had my shoes and sweater on. I really didn’t change my eating habits that much even though I could try harder, which I am going to do since I am so happy with my 9 lbs but I am hoping every 6 weeks I lose weight until I’m down to 140 at least that’s my goal then I will set another goal for 120, and I can stop there because I don’t want to be a stick.
Thank for sharing that gives me hope I’m hoping in 6 weeks my weight is lower. I’m 5’2 177 hoping to see some results for lower my weight I am excersing 20- 40 min a day, I try to watch my steps with fitbit.
In the Beginning I lost 9 pounds in 6 weeks, but game again, I
did not change my diet, I don’t know what happen, spoke to my doctor she say could be the age, I will need more exercise AFFFF
Hi am going to start taking metformin next week 2x 500 a day am also planning to go to the gym in the mornings my question is if I take it met with my breakfast will it stop me from training in bcoz of the sides affect would it be ideal to take one tablet with lunch and one with dinner to avoid the morning side affects …any advice will be very helpful …..thank you
Hi I’m Karen I’m 54 and I went to have blood work done a few weeks back . My dr suggested since Metformin since I’m borderline for Pre Diabetes she said take 500mg cut in half for the first 3 weeks then go to the whole pill. I’m not a great breakfast eater, I usually have coffee then later at lunch Ill eat something like Sargento cheese snacks , or fruit sometimes a protein shake. so my large meal is at dinner . I’m wondering will I get the side effects if I’m using it in the evening? Since my body will be adjusting to it?
I’m going to go to the bookstore tonight to pick up a book on Pre diabetes to educate myself so I can make better healthy choices I go back in April to see the dr and we will see where I am weight wise
I’m happy to say this is the first week on Metformin and I’m taking the 1/2 pill with dinner so this past week I”ve experienced the side effects just 2 days in the beginning, nothing since . I’ve been measuring my food intake and excersing cardio and weights and walks everyday, The weight is coming off and my BMI is dropping too! I’m hoping to keep sticking to this way of life, I eliminated the pasta and sugars and added veggies and fruit I feel so energized! I feel like this is going to be the best thing for me. I go back in April to see my doctor I’m excited to see how much weight comes off by then.

Have been taking Metformin since last summer, diarrhea constantly, was afraid to leave my house. So in Feb my doctor switched to the time release, diarrhea gone, but last nite I had horrible aching in my legs, couldnt sleep. Heaviness in my chest, kind of like heartburn. I have lost 12 lbs. I’m hoping these side effects go away, I’m only taking a half pill twice a day for two weeks then it goes to double 1000 mg
Any suggestions on the side effects ?
I’ve been on Metformin since August and I have seen a total weight loss of about 23 pounds. My appetite has changed drastically and I must admit the weight loss can be a scary thing when you notice yourself losing and you’re basically not doing anything different as far as dieting and exercising.

Really happy tht I found this site I have started taking 2+ 500 morning and lunch time before meals how long Before I start losing weight
I have a diagnosis of pcos, which has led to my recent diagnosis of prediabetes. Currently taking 500mg dose Metformin daily for past several months. I have experienced significant weight loss, however this was with severe exercise and dietary changes. When i have gone a period of time without the exercise, and eating poorly i have noticed that my weight has remained very stable-ocassionally losing a couple of kgs. I am also a lot less hungry and tired.
Side Effects, such as stomach cramps and loose bowels went away by taking a slower released dose. I take Metformin at night with food, as it can cause minor muscle crample, mine are mostly in the legs.
I have PCOS and Hypothyroidism…doctor prescribed me with melmet SR 500, I am using it for 15 days ..lost 1 kg so far.

Hi Edd! I love your song “It’s Now or Never”! You have a beautiful voice and congrats on the weight loss and lowered BP! Thank you to everyone posting here, I’ve really enjoyed reading your comments. I am 38 yrs old. My doctor did blood work and informed me that I am prediabetic. I’m starting Metformin today. I am 5’6″ and 168lbs. I’m hoping that it helps me lose some weight. I have been trying to eat right and before the coronavirus outbreak, I had been going to the gym. I would like to lose about 40 lbs. I am shooting for results as good as what you have had. Thanks again and I hope everyone stays healthy and safe!
I stumbled upon this article after reading about weight loss programs out there, surprised when I started seeing Metformin coming up in the related searches. Some of the articles or posts talked about various celebrities and how they loss weight. I’m not sure any of them used Metformin or not. Your article gave me a lot of information I couldn’t find any where else and eventually lead me to find this great weight loss program that I tried and it worked wonders for me. It didn’t happen over night, but I went from 225 lbs. and getting closer to my ideal weight of 195 lbs.
If anyone is interested, please check it out, shorturl.at/chvZ9
Thanks for all the great information, I will be reading more.
Metformin is a new term for me. Thanks for explaining it really well. However, I follow iahas.com for weight loss tips, as I prefer a natural diet. I will add your blog to my list as well.
wonderful article thanks for sharing the great information
I gained about 100 pounds and couldn’t lose it no matter how much I exercised or dieted. I was then diagnosed with pre type 2 diabetes and prescribed metformin. Without even trying, I’ve lost 17 pounds in about 2 months! I had some stomach issues at first but I also had a sudden drop in my appetite while taking it. I often forget about eating now. It’s great! It’s a lot like phentermine without the jitters. So I say YES, for me, it helps you to lose weight.
