Lactic Acid – Overview
Lactic acid or Lactate (the subtle difference is explained here) is one of the most well known and talked about metabolic products in the world of sports, health and fitness, but there is surprisingly very little accessible scientific information or explanation out there as to what lactic acid actually is or how important a role it actually plays.
Lactic acid rose to fame decades ago as a result of the health and fitness boom, but as with other claims such as electrolytes a lot of what was said was quite simply untrue and people’s opinions quickly came to be taken as scientific fact and from there they perpetuated.
Unlike electrolytes, the mistruths about lactic acid were not created in order to aid marketing efforts but were more born out of ignorance and to this day many text books still carry incorrect information and some lecturers still relay this information to their university students.
The scientific community has since moved past the old untruths about lactic acid, and has in fact done so for some time now so it is quite astounding to see that this hasn’t filtered through to the sporting population who are the people to whom this information really matters!
The following pages aim to bring the scientific information and breakthroughs regarding lactic acid into the public domain in a way that is both accurate and detailed but still understandable to everyone.
